Konami and developer Screen Burn rolled out Silent Hill: Townfall Update 1.6 yesterday on October 29, introducing a brand-new difficulty mode just in time for Halloween. Alongside the new mode, the patch delivers several gameplay refinements for PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
Originally released on September 24, Silent Hill: Townfall marks the latest entry in Konami’s ongoing revival of its iconic horror franchise. The title follows the successful releases of the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f. In Townfall, players travel to the isolated Scottish island town of St. Amelia. There, protagonist Simon Ordell must uncover a disturbing mystery through first-person exploration, puzzle-solving, and stealth.
While critics praised the game’s unsettling atmosphere and storytelling, player reception remained divided after launch. Specifically, many players complained about frustrating stealth encounters and technical performance issues. Screen Burn has already released several patches to fix shader-compilation stuttering and gameplay complaints, and Update 1.6 continues that effort.
New Hard Mode & Stealth Rebalancing
According to an October 29 report by Game Rant, Update 1.6 introduces a new Hard difficulty mode. This setting sits directly between the existing Normal and Nightmare options. Furthermore, Screen Burn rebalanced all four difficulty levels to create a smoother progression curve throughout the campaign.
To achieve this balance, the update adjusts resource availability in specific sections and scales enemy hearing sensitivity with the chosen difficulty. Additionally, players can now see their exact position on the map across every difficulty setting.
Notably, Update 1.6 also adjusts the behavior of “The Weight”, an enemy that caused major frustration after launch. Players previously criticized the creature for lingering near objectives and killing Simon instantly upon catching him. Earlier on October 8, Screen Burn released a patch that made the creature less aggressive and replaced its instant-kill grabs with heavy damage on both Story and Normal difficulties. However, Update 1.6 restricts that reduced attack severity exclusively to Story Mode. Consequently, this change preserves the intended challenge on Normal and higher settings while keeping Story Mode accessible.
Silent Hill: Townfall Update 1.6 Key Highlights & PC Upgrades
Beyond combat and stealth adjustments, Update 1.6 introduces several quality-of-life, accessibility, and technical upgrades. Most notably, PC players now have access to Nvidia DLSS Ray Reconstruction. This feature improves the visual quality of supported ray-traced effects, though Konami has not specified whether the option boosts overall frame rates.
Furthermore, the update clarifies the descriptions for each difficulty setting and adds a warning screen when players select Nightmare difficulty on a first playthrough. To improve accessibility, the developer also upgraded the valve status lighting so colorblind players can distinguish visual cues more easily. In addition, the patch adds new gameplay tutorials, revises several puzzle hints, and reorganizes the options menu into clearer categories while clarifying keyboard and mouse customization options. Players can visit Konami’s official announcement to read the complete patch notes and full list of bug fixes.
Ultimately, Silent Hill: Townfall arrives during a major renaissance for the broader franchise after years of inactivity. By releasing the Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill f, and Townfall, Konami has shown a clear willingness to experiment with different developers, settings, and styles of psychological horror. Although Konami has not confirmed a story expansion or sequel for Townfall, continuous updates could steadily improve its reputation among players who struggled with the launch version. With Halloween arriving tomorrow, both newcomers and returning fans now have a fresh reason to revisit St. Amelia.
