The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad and the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) jointly launched a countdown event marking preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 on 19 May.
Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker and PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani welcomed Minister of Railways Hanif Abbasi and Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Chairman Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan.
Representatives from Coca‑Cola, McDonald’s, a football manufacturing company, and members of diplomatic and sports communities joined approximately 150 guests at the ceremonial.
Natalie Baker emphasized the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a historic opportunity for America, coinciding with celebrations of the United States’ 250th Independence Day anniversary.
She highlighted the “American Decade of Sport,” noting the United States will host at least 10 major international events between 2026 and 2034.
These include the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, alongside other tournaments expected to strengthen economies and deepen cultural connections.
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani expressed pride in collaborating with the U.S. Embassy, acknowledging Pakistan’s excitement despite the national team not qualifying for the tournament.
He praised the United States’ hosting capabilities, citing upcoming events including the 2028 Olympics, 2031 Rugby World Cup, and the bid for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Gilani emphasized football’s global unity, expressing hope the World Cup will bring people closer together while celebrating the sport across Pakistan and internationally.
A highlight of the evening featured unveiling an oversized football manufactured in Sialkot, Punjab, followed by ceremonial gift exchanges and Coca‑Cola’s recognition of female national players.
