Google Meet for Android Auto is now rolling out widely to all users, letting drivers join scheduled video calls directly from their car dashboard. The wider release follows a limited rollout that began in April, and it should reach everyone soon.
The feature is audio-only by design. There is no video support, and your phone’s camera stays off during the call. The car interface offers a stripped-down layout with controls to mute, switch your Bluetooth output device, and end the call. When a call starts, your phone automatically enters “On-the-Go” mode, which enlarges buttons, disables the camera, and removes distractions.
The Android Auto app includes two tabs. A “Scheduled” tab surfaces upcoming meetings, while a “History” tab lets you quickly call recent contacts or groups. Tapping a call joins instantly, with no pre-call screen. However, instant meeting links only appear under Scheduled, so a call must already be on your calendar before you connect to Android Auto.
Some restrictions apply for safety. Features like Hand Raise, Q&A, and Polls are unavailable in the car. If a breakout room is created, you move into it automatically and return to the main room when it ends. There is also a first-run quirk: you may need to open and restart the Meet app on your phone before it works in the car. Google’s support page also confirms Work profile accounts are not supported, though active work calls still appear on the display.
The rollout follows Google’s recent launch of Meet for Apple CarPlay, and the integration now uses the redesigned Google Workspace icon for Meet.
