Google is preparing to launch its new Google Books, with an official media event scheduled for September 15 in New York. The company first revealed plans for the laptops in May. It also confirmed that they will run a new Android-based operating system.
Earlier this month, Google gave a first look at some of the upcoming laptops. Lenovo and Asus were among the first vendor partners to show their devices. Now, the September event will give Google a chance to officially introduce the new hardware.
The announcement will also focus on the software powering these laptops. Google is expected to introduce the operating system previously rumored to be called Aluminum OS. However, the company has not confirmed its official name yet.
The new platform will use the Android technology stack and bring the experience closer to Android. It is expected to combine elements of Chrome OS with Android. The system will also use Android’s native codebase.
Google says the new lineup will feature premium hardware in different shapes and sizes. Despite those differences, the laptops will share a distinctive Glowbar. Recent visual leaks have already shown this design feature.
Asus, HP, Lenovo, and Dell are confirmed as the first hardware partners for the new Google Books. Their involvement suggests Google is planning a broader launch across several laptop designs.
The New York event will bring together media from around the world. Journalists will also have time to try the first Google Books in person. They are expected to run benchmarks and other tests before sharing their early impressions.
With both new hardware and a redesigned Android-based platform, the September 15 event could mark an important shift for Google’s laptop strategy.
