Netflix just released its global viewing data for the week of August 24 to August 30. Unsurprisingly, the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 Extended Look absolutely dominated the platform. The video easily secured the number one spot on Netflix’s top 10 English-language movies list.
GTA 6 Extended Look Shatters Global Streaming Records
The GTA 6 Extended Look premiered as a timed Netflix exclusive on August 28 at 12 AM PKT. During its short time on the platform that week, the video pulled in a staggering 31.1 million views. Furthermore, fans logged a massive total of 14 million hours watched.
This achievement is especially impressive because the exclusive first-look debuted midway through the data collection period. Consequently, Netflix confirmed via a press release that the trailer hit number one in 87 of the 93 tracked countries worldwide. This massive engagement proves the timed exclusivity gamble paid off perfectly for the streaming service.
27 Minutes of Next-Gen Gameplay
Fans have waited patiently for answers since the game’s initial announcement back in December 2023. Finally, this extended trailer delivered their very first look at actual gameplay. The video featured about 27 minutes of in-engine footage captured entirely on a base model PS5.
During the showcase, the video teased a handful of story missions and highlighted an assortment of open-world side activities. However, publisher Take-Two Interactive locked this long-awaited reveal behind a Netflix paywall. For six hours, fans could only watch the presentation through official means on Netflix before it finally hit YouTube. Naturally, this timed exclusivity disappointed and frustrated many fans. The official reasoning behind this business decision remains unknown.
Outshining Hollywood Blockbusters
The massive success of the GTA 6 reveal completely overshadowed traditional Hollywood movies. ‘The Whisper Man’, a new crime thriller directed by James Ashcroft, took the number two spot. Starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, and Michelle Monaghan, the film garnered 23.2 million views and 44.1 million hours watched in just two days after debuting on August 28. Meanwhile, the critically-panned film ‘The Last House’ landed in third place with a much lower 5.8 million views.
Additionally, the GTA 6 showcase outperformed popular mainstays like ‘Shrek’ and ‘KPop Demon Hunters’. The latter title actually pulled 2.9 million views last week, continuing its impressive 63-week streak in the Netflix top 10. Other movies rounding out the global top 10 list included ‘Don’t Say Good Luck’, ‘The Heat’, ’72 Hours’, ’13 Minutes’, and ‘2012’.
