Rockstar Games has officially revealed groundbreaking details about the highly anticipated GTA 6 map. Recently, new information surfaced regarding Vice City and the broader state of Leonida. The developer is clearly aiming to deliver its most ambitious open world to date.
GTA 6 Map Details: Massive & Unrestricted Open World
The overall scale of GTA 6 dwarfs its predecessors. The new map is approximately twice the size of GTA 5. Furthermore, it offers roughly three times the playable area found in Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City itself spans about twice the size of Los Santos. Meanwhile, the developed regions surrounding the city are a staggering 11 times larger than the outskirts of Los Santos.
Leonida takes the form of an island without a panhandle. The state divides into five distinct counties containing approximately 10 cities and towns. As a result, players will have a massive and varied geography to explore. Mount Kalaga stands in the northern region and serves as the highest point on the map.
Once players complete the opening missions, the game unlocks unrestricted free roam. Consequently, traditional barriers will no longer restrict map travel. However, a “fog of war” system hides unexplored areas. Therefore, players must physically travel through the world to uncover the map completely.
Unprecedented Density & Interactivity
Rockstar emphasizes world density just as much as sheer size. The map features hundreds of accessible interiors. Buildings equipped with helipads are particularly impressive. Players can fully explore these structures using stairs or elevators without enduring any loading screens.

Exploration extends well beyond the city streets. Leonida features multiple islands and expansive underwater environments. Players can utilize diving equipment to uncover shipwrecks and search for hidden treasures.
Getting around this massive world does not strictly require driving. The game introduces numerous public transportation systems. These options include buses, trains, taxis, a ride-sharing service called “RydeMe,” and the Metromover. Players can quickly skip these journeys. Alternatively, they can ride in real-time, hold conversations with NPC passengers, and listen to the in-game radio.
Next-Gen Navigation & Wanted Systems
The user interface receives a massive overhaul. The pause menu now features a highly detailed, satellite-style 3D map. This dynamic map changes based on your zoom level. It displays major highways when zoomed out and gradually reveals small alleys as you zoom in. Moreover, this tool proves essential for heist preparation. It highlights points of interest, businesses, gang locations, potential heist entrances or exits, and the exact value of available loot.
The map also ties directly into an overhauled wanted system. Committing a crime generates a temporary “heat” zone. The immediate crime scene appears red on the map. Additionally, a lighter-red perimeter indicates an area of heightened police vigilance. If a player achieves a maximum six-star wanted level, this heat expands across the entire map.
Finally, real estate works differently in this installment. Players can purchase garages throughout Leonida. However, they cannot buy safe houses. Jason and Lucia remain on the run throughout the story. As a result, their living arrangements will change dynamically as the narrative progresses.
