The National Assembly Standing Committee on IT & Telecom expressed strong dissatisfaction over the absence of the Federal Minister for IT & Telecom and secretary IT during its latest meeting chaired by Amin-ul-Haque.
During the meeting, members raised concerns about poor mobile and internet services, reduced helpline numbers, and questioned the ministry’s plans for improvement.
Committee Chairman criticised mobile operators including Jazz, Zong, and Ufone for cutting helpline numbers instead of expanding support systems.
He urged the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take strict action against operators providing substandard services, including issuing show‑cause notices and imposing fines.
Member Sadiq Memon questioned whether service quality would improve even with the introduction of 5G or 6G, stressing that users remain dissatisfied.
He demanded clarity on how the ministry intends to enhance mobile and internet services across the country.
The committee also objected to IT ministry officials travelling to Gilgit‑Baltistan during the election period. Members argued the timing raised questions about neutrality, with Memon alleging officials were supporting a political campaign.
Ministry representatives responded that the visit was pre‑scheduled and related to official duties, but acknowledged the trip could have been rescheduled after the election announcement.
CEO Ignite did not attend the meeting, prompting further criticism from the chairman.
Officials explained that both the CEO and senior IT ministry officers were in Gilgit‑Baltistan. Members insisted that participation in committee proceedings should have been prioritised.
The committee concluded by demanding stronger regulatory measures from PTA and clearer strategies from the IT ministry to address public dissatisfaction with telecom services.
