OpenAI has launched workspace agents in ChatGPT, cloud-based autonomous assistants powered by the Codex model that automate multi-step team workflows and integrate directly into business tools including Slack, Google Drive, Salesforce and Microsoft applications.
The workspace agents represent what OpenAI describes as an evolution of custom GPTs, shifting from individual prompt responses to handling complex team workflows that continue running even when users are offline. The feature is currently available as a research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and Teachers plan subscribers.
Workspace agents operate within their own dedicated workspace with access to files, code execution, connected tools and persistent memory that carries across sessions. Unlike custom GPTs that respond to individual prompts, workspace agents can plan and execute multi-step tasks, gather context from multiple systems, follow team processes, request approvals when needed and hand off work across different tools.
Teams can interact with workspace agents through ChatGPT or deploy them directly into Slack channels where they monitor conversations and pick up requests independently. The agents can be scheduled to run automatically at specific times or triggered by particular events, allowing them to handle recurring workflows without constant supervision.
OpenAI shared several examples already in production within its own organization. A Software Reviewer checks employee software requests against approved tools and policies while creating IT tickets when needed. An accounting agent prepares key parts of month-end close including journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations and variance analysis. A Product Feedback Router monitors Slack channels and support forums to capture feedback and turn signals into weekly product action items.
The agents incorporate built-in safeguards designed to block prompt injection attacks while allowing monitoring through OpenAI’s Compliance API. Administrators can limit which data and tools each agent may access and require human approval for sensitive actions like sending emails or creating calendar entries.
Workspace agents are free until May 6, 2026, after which OpenAI plans to move to credit-based billing for Business and Enterprise customers. Existing custom GPTs will remain available during the research preview period.
