Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a summary concerning School Teacher Interns (STIs), with all interns expected to return to schools by next week, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced.
Around 25,000 School Teacher Interns have been waiting for a decision since their contracts expired on May 22, shortly before the summer holidays.
According to Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, the chief minister has approved the summary for the interns, paving the way for their return to government schools.
Hayat said all STIs would return to schools by next week at the latest. However, the announcement did not provide an exact joining date or clarify the duration of the new contracts and payment terms.
The Punjab Teachers Union had previously called for an early decision on the reappointment of STIs, highlighting teacher shortages in government schools.
The union said the shortage was affecting academic activities and creating difficulties for schools in managing teaching responsibilities.
Many STIs had also been awaiting clarity on whether their contracts would be extended or whether they would be reappointed after their previous contracts expired on May 22.
The chief minister’s approval is expected to provide relief to the interns and help address teacher shortages in government schools across Punjab. Further details regarding contracts, salaries, and joining dates are expected to be announced by the Education Department.
