The Punjab government has approved the development of a state-owned cloud infrastructure system worth Rs7.4 billion, aimed at strengthening artificial intelligence capabilities and digital governance across the province.
The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has begun preparing the PC-1 document for the project, which is designed to establish a modern government cloud system supporting AI-driven initiatives.
As part of the plan, the provincial government will seek technical assistance from a global technology company to develop a GPU-based cloud infrastructure.
The new system will provide a secure environment for government data while supporting large-scale AI and big data projects. Once operational, the cloud infrastructure will serve as the backbone for e-governance, artificial intelligence applications and data-intensive government operations, eliminating the need for reliance on external cloud service providers.
The Punjab Chief Minister has granted in-principle approval for the initiative. PITB officials said the project marks a major step toward reducing the provinces dependence on foreign cloud platforms while building indigenous digital infrastructure.
Officials also noted that an AI-equipped cloud system has become an essential requirement for Punjab as the province moves to expand its digital governance framework and integrate emerging technologies into public sector operations.
