Punjab has decided to introduce activity-based textbooks for primary school students up to Class 5, marking a major shift in the early education system.
According to officials from the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board (PCTB), the new books will be rolled out from the 2027 academic session, with preparation work already underway in line with the updated curriculum.
Officials said this is the first time Punjab is developing an activity-based book system for students up to the primary level. Under the new approach, teaching will shift away from conventional methods and focus instead on activity-based learning.
The initiative aims to move students away from rote memorization and instead build their practical and creative abilities, PCTB officials said.
They added that the activity-based books will give primary school students more opportunities to engage in hands-on learning, helping them better understand course material and relate it to real-life situations.
According to PCTB officials, work on preparing the new books under the updated curriculum has already begun, and formal teaching through the new textbooks will start from the 2027 academic session in Punjab.
