PlayStation 3 (PS3) game emulation just reached a massive milestone. Just yesterday, the developers behind the open-source RPCS3 emulator announced a groundbreaking update. You can now play your physical PS3 game discs directly on your PC. This means you just plug in a supported Blu-ray disc drive and start playing. You do not need to rely on any servers. Consequently, you can enjoy physical media released nearly two decades ago with zero hassle.
According to RPCS3, users Megamouse and digant73 led this major breakthrough. To prove it works, the RPCS3 team successfully ran a copy of ‘Drakengard 3’ (also known as ‘Drag-On Dragoon 3’) directly from the disc. Furthermore, this new disc drive support extends across multiple operating systems. You can use it on Windows 11, FreeBSD, macOS, and Linux.

PS3 Game Discs on PC: Hardware Requirements & Compatibility
Naturally, you need specific hardware to run these games smoothly. The developers recommend using a six-core CPU. Additionally, you must pair it with a GPU that supports Vulkan 1.2 or newer. You will also need a compatible Blu-ray Disc drive. The team successfully tested models from popular brands like LG and Asus.
Currently, the emulator supports a vast majority of the console’s catalog. Back in July 2026, RPCS3 confirmed compatibility with 75% of the entire PS3 game library. Therefore, out of the 2,300 physical and digital titles released, you can comfortably play at least 1,700 games on the emulator today.
A Timely Win for Game Preservation
This RPCS3 update arrives at a crucial time for game preservation. Earlier this year in July 2026, Sony announced it is shutting down the PS3 PlayStation Store in waves. Ultimately, a complete shutdown will happen by July 2027.
Once a country’s storefront closes, you cannot buy any new digital PS3 games. Granted, you can still download previously purchased digital titles past the shutdown date. However, Sony has not clarified exactly how long that option will remain available.
