Moosa Harraj Becomes Fourth Pakistani To Win Oxford Student Union Presidency

LONDON: Moosa Harraj has made history as the fourth Pakistani to be elected president of the Oxford University Student Union (OUSU), following in the footsteps of leaders like Benazir Bhutto.

Hailing from Balliol College, where he studies Economics, Harraj secured the presidency for the upcoming term after a highly competitive election. He won by a margin of 200 votes against his opponent, Chris Collins, in what became a record-breaking race.

With 833 people selecting him as their first choice, Harraj emerged as one of the most popular candidates in recent OUSU history.

His victory is also significant as he became the first president of Pakistani Punjabi descent. The son of federal minister Raza Hayat Hiraj, Harraj has now joined the ranks of four South Asian presidents elected to this prestigious position. Before joining Oxford in 2023, he attended Charterhouse School in Surrey and Aitchison College in Lahore.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Faisal, extended his congratulations, calling Harraj’s achievement a proud moment for Pakistan. Moosa also received widespread recognition for his success.

This milestone reflects the growing influence of Pakistani students in top international universities, demonstrating their increasing leadership and impact on global academic platforms.
