Severe Cold: Teachers Seek More Winter Holidays in Punjab
The Punjab Teachers’ Union has urged the provincial government to extend winter holidays by 10 more days for primary schools, citing intense cold weather and rising health risks for young children. The demand comes as temperatures across Punjab continue to drop, increasing concerns over student safety and attendance.
Punjab schools are currently observing winter vacations announced due to seasonal cold conditions. However, teachers believe the existing break is insufficient, especially for primary-level students who are more vulnerable to weather-related illnesses. In past winters, similar extensions were granted in response to cold waves and public pressure.
Punjab Teachers’ Union General Secretary Rana Liaquat Ali said that extreme cold significantly raises the risk of illnesses such as pneumonia, flu, and chest infections among young children. He emphasized that schools reopening too early could endanger students’ health and disrupt learning due to increased absenteeism.
“The government must prioritize children’s health and take an immediate decision keeping the current weather conditions in view,” he said.
Education stakeholders have also pointed out that many public schools lack adequate heating arrangements, making classrooms unsafe during severe cold spells.
