Ubisoft is finally giving fans what they want. Three classic entries in the Far Cry series are getting significant performance upgrades on current-gen consoles. After a cryptic tease on social media, the publisher confirmed that Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, and Far Cry Primal will soon support 60 frames per second (FPS).
Currently, these titles are capped at 30 FPS on consoles. This update marks a major improvement for players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The Cryptic Announcement
The news broke after Ubisoft posted a mysterious image on X on January 16. The image featured three equations made of emojis. However, fans quickly deciphered the riddles. They correctly guessed that the “Gold Star” went to the three specific Far Cry titles.

Subsequently, Ubisoft clarified the release timeline. The 60 FPS updates will officially arrive this Wednesday, January 21.
Performance, Pricing & Availability
These games have technically been playable on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S through backward compatibility. Until now, they offered features like 1440p resolution and auto HDR. However, the frame rate remained locked at 30 FPS.
This update unlocks that cap, bringing the gameplay in line with modern standards. The Far Cry franchise, known for its fast-paced first-person action, benefits heavily from smoother frame rates. While the franchise has been quiet since 2021’s Far Cry 6, this move breathes new life into its back catalogue.
While the release date is set, some details remain unclear. Ubisoft has not specified if these updates are free patches or if they require a separate purchase.
PlayStation users might have an advantage here. Currently, subscribers to PS Plus Extra have access to Far Cry 3 Classic Edition, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition, and Far Cry Primal via the “Game Catalog”. It remains to be seen if the 60 FPS upgrade will automatically apply to these versions.
More from Ubisoft?
This announcement might just be the start for Ubisoft in 2026. Rumours suggest the company is preparing more legacy content. Specifically, speculation points to a launch for the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake and a remaster of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.
For now, however, gamers can look forward to revisiting the chaotic open worlds of Far Cry at a smooth 60 FPS starting January 21.
