Star Wars is officially crossing over with Dungeons and Dragons. Wizards of the Coast announced this exciting news on Thursday, July 30, during the opening day of Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis. Interestingly, Darth Vader himself made the announcement near the end of the keynote presentation. Fans can expect the partnership to launch in 2027. Furthermore, this upcoming release marks the first official D&D expansion inspired by the Star Wars universe.
Dungeons & Dragons x Star Wars: A Long-Awaited Tabletop Crossover
Dungeons and Dragons turned 50 years old in mid-2026. During this time, the iconic tabletop franchise released approximately 1,200 official supplements. Before Wizards of the Coast took over the brand in 2000, TSR, Inc. alone published more than 800 titles. Despite this massive historical catalog, the game never featured an official Star Wars expansion utilizing the standard D&D ruleset.

However, the two properties did cross paths previously. Back in 2000, Wizards of the Coast published a standalone Star Wars Roleplaying Game. It utilized the D&D-derived d20 system. During its seven-year run, the publisher released nearly three dozen books and accessories across three editions. Yet, they never marketed the game as a standard Dungeons and Dragons product.
The ‘Season of Rebellion’ & Universes Beyond
Wizards of the Coast placed the new Star Wars crossover within its “Universes Beyond” banner. Specifically, the expansion belongs to the “Season of Rebellion” roadmap. Currently, the publisher has not shared concrete details regarding the format or scope of the release. Because they described the collaboration as a “partnership”, the crossover might include a coordinated wave of sourcebooks, digital releases, and adventures. Conversely, the term might simply reflect standard licensing agreements.
Meanwhile, the broader Universes Beyond initiative kicks off on November 17, 2026. A World of Warcraft-themed D&D expansion will launch the program. Unlike the highly secretive Star Wars reveal, Wizards detailed the WoW expansion extensively. It serves as a complete gameplay expansion. Players will receive new subclasses, playable species, spells, equipment, professions, monsters, bosses, factions, and seven dungeons.
World of Warcraft features dungeon-crawling gameplay that naturally aligns with core D&D systems. In contrast, Star Wars tabletop rulesets usually rely on substantially different mechanics. Therefore, fans eagerly wait to see how Wizards of the Coast adapts the galaxy far, far away into the D&D ruleset next year.
