OpenAI is planning to launch its first hardware product, and it looks like earbuds will be the choice. Earlier, the company thought about making a small pendant or a pen, something calm and simple, as CEO Sam Altman suggested. But now, it seems they chose a device that’s easier to make and use.
The report comes from a Chinese tipster on Weibo, who says rising hardware costs may have made OpenAI rethink its original plans. The earbuds, likely called “Dime,” are expected to hit the market by the end of this year. There aren’t many details yet, but the company may release a more advanced version once the global shortage of high-bandwidth memory improves.
OpenAI even brought in Apple’s former chief designer, Jony Ive, hinting at a sleek, thoughtful design. The earbuds are expected to use OpenAI’s own AI model, allowing users to interact with AI in a new and personal way.
This step shows OpenAI is moving beyond software and bringing its AI into everyday devices. For now, earbuds seem like a small start, but they could change how people use AI in daily life.
