Gamers anticipating the next generation of console gaming may need more patience. New reports surrounding Sony indicate that the PlayStation 6 (PS6) release date could be delayed until 2028 or potentially 2029.
Reportedly, an ongoing “RAM crisis” drives this significant schedule shift. The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has caused a massive surge in demand for RAM, specifically for data centres that power AI models. Consequently, chip shortages and skyrocketing prices are impacting hardware manufacturers globally.
If this timeline holds true, the PlayStation 5 will see an unprecedented lifecycle. Sony typically launches new hardware every 6 or 7 years. A 2029 release would extend the PS5’s lifespan to 9 years, marking the longest gap between consoles in PlayStation history.
PS6 Release Date Delayed: Industry Analysts Weigh In
This news aligns with recent industry speculation. Earlier this year, an analyst at MST Financial reported on Sony’s Q3 performance. The report suggested that the next PlayStation console would face a longer delay than many expected.
Furthermore, Sony’s lead console architect, Mark Cerny, hinted at this timeline late last year. During a 2025 discussion with AMD Senior Vice President Jack Huynh, Cerny stated that the next generation would arrive “in a few years’ time”. While many initially interpreted this as a late 2028 window, the intensifying RAM shortage now makes 2029 a strong possibility.
Nintendo Switch 2 Faces Price Hikes
Sony is not the only company feeling the pressure. The Bloomberg report claims that Nintendo is reconsidering its pricing strategy for the Switch 2.
The rising cost of RAM affects PC enthusiasts and major corporations alike. Although Nintendo previously insisted it would not raise prices soon, the company now faces difficult choices. Reports suggest Nintendo may increase the price of its newest console before the end of 2026 to offset these manufacturing costs.
New Games to Fill the Gap
While the wait for the PS6 grows longer, the PS5 library continues to expand. A recent State of Play event unveiled massive titles to keep players occupied.
Santa Monica Studios announced a remake of the original God of War Trilogy and surprised fans by shadow-dropping a brand-new God of War game for the PS5. Additionally, Saber Interactive revealed a new John Wick game, and a sequel to Kena: Bridge of Spirits is officially on the way.
With these major releases on the horizon, the PlayStation 5 remains a powerhouse for the foreseeable future.
