The federal government has inducted 15 electric vehicles into the fleet of the Islamabad Capital Territory Traffic Police as part of efforts to improve traffic management and reduce fuel costs in the capital.
The induction ceremony was held in Islamabad, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attending as the chief guest. Officials described the move as a step toward promoting environmentally friendly transportation under the government’s broader energy-saving policy.
According to officials, the initial batch of 15 eco-friendly vehicles has been provided under the prime minister’s vision. They noted that work on fuel economy and electric vehicle policies had begun prior to the recent Gulf crisis, with procurement initiated several months earlier.
The newly inducted electric vehicles will be deployed on major roads across Islamabad to enhance traffic flow and ensure quicker emergency response. Each vehicle will be staffed by a dedicated team, including a captain, responders, and a driver, all equipped with special uniforms.
Officials stated that each electric vehicle can travel between 350 to 400 kilometers on a full charge. Fast charging is expected to take 60 to 90 minutes, while standard charging may require 6 to 8 hours.
In terms of cost efficiency, authorities estimate that each electric vehicle could save approximately Rs. 0.55 million per month compared to petrol-powered alternatives. Based on these projections, the vehicles are expected to recover their cost within 13 to 14 months.
The government also plans to add another 15 electric vehicles to the traffic police fleet in the near future, as part of a broader initiative to modernize Islamabad’s traffic management system and promote sustainable transport solutions.
