Qualcomm may be preparing for a major shift in its chip manufacturing strategy as talks with Samsung continue. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has been seen in South Korea meeting senior Samsung executives. The discussions focus on next-generation chip production using the 2nm process. Reports suggest Qualcomm is considering Samsung to manufacture its upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processors.
Earlier this year at CES in January, Amon confirmed that Qualcomm was in talks with Samsung about future chip production. Those discussions now appear to be ongoing, showing that both companies are still exploring a possible partnership.
If Qualcomm finalizes this move, it would mark a return to Samsung for flagship chip production after several years. The company moved its high-end chip orders to TSMC in 2022. That shift happened after concerns about Samsung’s manufacturing yields and thermal performance.
Since then, Samsung has reportedly worked to fix those issues. The company is said to have improved chip yield rates and addressed overheating problems that previously affected Qualcomm’s decision. As a result, trust between the two firms appears to be rebuilding.
At the same time, rising costs at TSMC may also be influencing Qualcomm’s thinking. With price pressure increasing, Samsung is becoming a more attractive option again.
For now, no final decision has been announced. However, the ongoing talks suggest Qualcomm is actively weighing its options for the next generation of Snapdragon chips.
