The Rs. 19 billion Kutchery Chowk remodeling project in Rawalpindi is in its final stages, with authorities announcing that newly constructed flyovers and underpasses will be opened for traffic by May 31.
According to officials from the Punjab Highway Department, around 92% of the work has been completed, and the road infrastructure will be handed over to the district administration in the last week of May.
Executive Engineer Qamar Ali Saqib said that major construction on flyovers and underpasses has been finalized, while finishing work on allied facilities is currently underway. A pedestrian bridge at Kutchery Chowk is nearing completion, and drainage infrastructure is also being developed.
Landscaping work has progressed significantly, with green belts largely completed and trees already planted along the roads. Streetlights have been installed, and cleaning operations across the project site have begun.
Officials said the Punjab Communication and Works Department is closely monitoring the project through weekly progress reports, ensuring both quality and timely completion.
Originally planned to be completed in 18 months, the project has advanced at a much faster pace. The Frontier Works Organization (FWO), which began construction in late November, is expected to complete the project within six months.
The development includes two flyovers and three underpasses aimed at reducing congestion at one of Rawalpindi’s busiest intersections, where over 250,000 vehicles pass daily.
Key components of the project include a four-lane flyover connecting The Mall with Rashid Minhas Road, and an underpass linking Old Airport Road to Saddar, handling nearly 197,000 vehicles per day.
Additionally, the Annexy Chowk area near Jinnah Park has been upgraded with a flyover and underpass to manage more than 142,000 vehicles daily. A two-lane underpass from Iftikhar Janjua Road to Kutchery Chowk has also been constructed, catering to over 146,000 vehicles each day.
Officials added that work on three additional underpasses along Peshawar Road, worth Rs. 8 billion, will accelerate once the Kutchery Chowk project is opened to traffic.
With utility shifting work on Peshawar Road nearly complete, excavation for the new underpasses is expected to begin in June, further improving traffic flow on a route used by more than 250,000 vehicles daily.
