The provincial government of Punjab has approved a government GPU cloud project, establishing the first local artificial intelligence platform for official and academic use.
As per the details, the initiative will host and train large language models locally, including Urdu support, while providing secure AI sandboxes to institutions and agencies.
Authorities confirmed successful trials of voice interfaces and intelligent search systems, highlighting risks of transferring sensitive government data to foreign cloud services.
Officials stated modern GPU infrastructure shortages previously hindered implementation, but the new project aims to overcome barriers and accelerate artificial intelligence deployment.
Punjab government currently serves over 130 million citizens across more than 50 sectors, with over one million employees working in public administration.
Punjab to Launch Satellite Internet
Last week, the provincial government revealed plan to launch satellite internet services to provide high-speed connectivity to remote and underserved areas across the province.
PMLN Senator Anusha Rehman, senior advisor to the Chief Minister of Punjab, announced the initiative during a leadership summit held at a private university in Lahore.
The former IT minister stated that villages, educational institutions, and hospitals across Punjab will receive improved connectivity through the newly planned satellite internet service.
Youth and technology targets
The provincial government also set a clear target to connect six million young people in Punjab with modern technology tools over the next four years ahead.
The summit also included detailed discussions on blockchain technology and digital assets, reflecting Punjab’s broader agenda to advance its digital economy significantly.
Rehman confirmed that satellite internet services will be launched at the government level in the near future, with formal timelines expected to be announced soon.
