The Sindh government has approved the procurement of 500 electric buses to strengthen public transport infrastructure in Karachi and Hyderabad as part of broader efforts to modernize urban mobility across the province.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority board chaired by Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.
During the meeting, authorities also approved the establishment of a modern heavy vehicle terminal outside Karachi on the Northern Bypass for trucks, trailers, and other heavy transport vehicles.
As part of the initiative, a dedicated heavy vehicle corridor will be developed from Karachi Port to the Northern Bypass to divert freight traffic away from major city roads and ease congestion.
Sharjeel Memon said the project is expected to improve traffic flow and support a more efficient transport network in Karachi.
Under the approved electric mobility plan, 450 electric buses will operate on 25 routes across Karachi, while 50 electric buses will serve five routes in Hyderabad under a public-private partnership model.
To support the expansion of electric transport, the board also approved five modern EV depots across Sindh, including four facilities in Karachi and one in Hyderabad.
The initiative is aimed at expanding sustainable public transport options and supporting the province’s transition toward cleaner urban mobility.
