The federal government has agreed to restore the supply of 35 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas to CNG stations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), providing relief to vehicle owners facing rising fuel costs.
According to officials, the decision was made after a meeting between federal and provincial representatives in Islamabad. Under the new arrangement, CNG stations in the province will receive gas supply from 6am to 6pm starting Thursday.
The move comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif constituted a ministerial committee to address concerns over the suspension of gas supply to CNG stations in KP last month.
Officials noted that the province requires around 40 to 45 mmcfd of gas daily to meet demand, while supply had been halted previously due to system constraints.
The meeting was attended by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Adviser to the Chief Minister on Finance Muzzammil Aslam, Opposition Leader Dr Ibadullah, federal officials, and representatives of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).
Muzzammil Aslam stated that under Article 158 of the Constitution, gas should be prioritized for the province where it is produced, noting that KP is a major gas-producing region.
Governor Kundi welcomed the decision, saying that political stakeholders had worked together to resolve the issue affecting residents and transport operators in the province.
