Pakistan Railways has announced a major digitization initiative aimed at modernizing freight operations, passenger services, and overall railway management through a nationwide smart infrastructure upgrade.
Under the Railway Advance Infrastructure Network (RAIN) program, the department plans to lay a 1,700-kilometer fiber-optic network to support digital systems across its operations.
Officials said the project is designed to create a fully integrated digital ecosystem for rail services and is being described as the first major revenue-focused modernization effort in the organization’s 78-year history.
The fiber network will include approximately 700 kilometers of Pakistan Railways-owned infrastructure, while another 1,000 kilometers will be developed in collaboration with the Frontier Works Organization under a strategic partnership model.
The initiative also includes public-private partnership arrangements for bandwidth transmission and connectivity expansion.
As part of the upgrade, Pakistan Railways plans to introduce its first fully digital freight manifest system to improve tracking, documentation, and operational efficiency.
In addition, GPS-based tracking systems will be deployed for locomotives and rolling stock to enhance real-time monitoring, safety, and management of railway assets.
The modernization drive is expected to significantly improve logistics performance and bring Pakistan Railways closer to global digital freight standards.
