The racing game genre just received a massive shakeup. Yesterday, Maverick Games officially announced Clutch. This brand-new open-world racing title comes directly from Mike Brown, the former creative director of Forza Horizon 5.
Currently in active development on Unreal Engine 5, Clutch aims to fill a forgotten niche in the market. While the Forza Horizon series thrives on a broad, happy-go-lucky car-collecting formula, Clutch takes a completely different route. Maverick Games is leaving behind the bloated vehicle rosters. Instead, they are focusing on a smaller, highly customizable lineup of cars.

‘Clutch’ is Breaking the Traditional Racing Mold
Clutch combines three distinct pillars of racing into a single experience. Players will tackle pro-tier circuit racing, dive into high-intensity illegal street racing, and evade cops in classic Need for Speed style police chases.
Furthermore, the game heavily emphasizes its narrative. A pair of prodigy sibling drivers will lead the story as the main protagonists. However, the most surprising feature revealed in the recent trailer is the extreme attention to interior details. Maverick Games promises some of the most detailed car interiors ever seen in a modern racing game. Players can even place a can of Red Bull inside their vehicle’s cupholder.
Brown noted that pushing an established franchise like Forza in a new direction is incredibly difficult. Businesses naturally prefer to maintain a profitable status quo. Therefore, he viewed Clutch as the perfect opportunity to create something fresh for the genre.
High Ambitions & Solo Development
Maverick Games holds massive ambitions for this new IP. Brown explicitly stated that the studio wants Clutch to reach the cultural heights of Need for Speed, Top Gear, and Fast & Furious. They want to build a tentpole franchise that drives car culture forward for the next decade.
However, the studio faces a tough road ahead. Just a few months ago, Maverick Games lost its original publishing deal with Amazon Games. Consequently, the studio is now funding and developing the game entirely on its own. They have not confirmed if they are actively seeking a new publisher.
Meanwhile, the competition remains fierce. Forza Horizon 6 continues to dominate with steady updates. The Crew: Motorsport offers a strong alternative, and titles like Assetto Corsa still lock down the simulator niche.
Despite this, Clutch has a clear opening. Its closest direct rival, Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown, recently failed to capture a substantial audience. This stumble leaves the door wide open for Maverick Games. If Clutch can deliver on its deep, fidelity-focused identity, it might just redefine the modern racing landscape.
