India is preparing to place military drone orders worth more than $2 billion from domestic manufacturers this year, marking the country’s largest-ever procurement of unmanned aerial systems.
According to industry officials, the planned acquisition is in an advanced stage and is expected to significantly expand the operational capabilities of the Indian armed forces. Deliveries are likely to take place over the next 18 to 24 months under a fast-track procurement mechanism designed to meet urgent military requirements.
The proposed purchase would represent a substantial increase from recent government contracts worth approximately $313 million for tactical-class drones. Industry estimates suggest the next phase of procurement could exceed 200 billion Indian rupees ($2 billion).
The move comes amid growing global demand for drones following conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and the Middle East, where unmanned systems have demonstrated their effectiveness in surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike operations.
India’s military modernization efforts have also accelerated after recent security challenges in the region. Officials and industry experts describe drones as force multipliers that enhance battlefield awareness and operational flexibility while offering cost-effective alternatives to traditional military assets.
The Indian government has simultaneously expanded support for domestic drone manufacturers through initiatives aimed at encouraging innovation, research, and indigenous defense production. Programs supporting startups and private-sector participation have contributed to rapid growth in the country’s drone industry.
India currently has more than 600 companies involved in drone and component manufacturing, with over 100 specializing in defense applications. Increased government backing, improved procurement opportunities, and growing investor interest have helped companies scale production and develop advanced unmanned technologies.
Analysts believe the expected procurement drive could further strengthen India’s domestic defense manufacturing sector while boosting the development of indigenous drone capabilities for future military operations.
