Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar has constituted special enforcement teams to ensure public transport operators implement reduced fares across the province following the federal government’s significant reduction in petroleum prices.
The minister directed transport authorities to immediately issue and enforce revised fare lists so that the benefits of lower fuel costs are passed on to commuters without delay.
“The provincial government is taking swift measures to ensure fare reductions take effect immediately,” Bilal Akbar said, adding that he would personally oversee inspections at bus terminals and transport facilities to ensure fair and realistic fare structures are maintained.
The move comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a reduction of Rs74 per litre in petrol prices, bringing the rate down to Rs299 per litre, while diesel prices were cut by Rs67 per litre to Rs311 per litre.
In his national address, the Prime Minister attributed the relief package to improved economic stability and declining global oil prices. He stated that the government utilized Rs129 billion in savings generated through development budget adjustments and austerity measures to shield citizens from the effects of global inflation.
Sharif also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in promoting stability in the Middle East, which he said contributed to improved economic conditions and greater market confidence. He thanked provincial governments for their cooperation in maintaining economic stability during a challenging global energy environment.
Provincial authorities have warned transport operators that strict action will be taken against those who fail to comply with the newly notified fare structures.
The initiative is expected to provide immediate financial relief to millions of daily commuters across Punjab by ensuring transport fares reflect the substantial reduction in fuel costs.
