Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the relaunch of the interest-free e-bike scheme, which aims to distribute 100,000 electric motorcycles to students over the next year.
According to official provincial data, the Government of Punjab will provide a financial subsidy of Rs 70,000 on each electric motorcycle. To secure a vehicle under the program, male students must provide an initial down payment of Rs 14,000, followed by interest-free monthly installments of Rs 2,100.
As a targeted expansion of the initiative, the Chief Minister announced that the provincial government will fully cover the down payment and registration fees for female students, who will only be responsible for the standard monthly installment of Rs 2,100.
Furthermore, the eligibility criteria for the interest-free installment plans have been extended to include government employees across Punjab.
In tandem with the two-wheeler rollout, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed transport authorities to execute a synchronized launch of broader electric transit solutions, including electric buses, e-taxis, and electric three-wheelers.
Under this long-term green transport strategy, the government plans to deploy 5,000 electric buses for public transit operations throughout the province over the next five years.
Earlier, it was reported that the Punjab government had decided to confiscate vehicles distributed under the E-Taxi Scheme after finding that some beneficiaries had failed to use them as commercial taxis.
Authorities launched a verification drive, revealing that several recipients had removed official branding and used the subsidized vehicles for private purposes instead.
Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said legal action and vehicle seizures would target only those who violated the scheme’s terms, as the government has complete records of all beneficiaries.
The initiative provided 1,100 e-taxis through interest-free installments under a PKR 4 billion subsidy to promote employment and environmentally friendly transport.
