Punjab Police issued more than 4.939 million traffic challans and imposed fines exceeding Rs 9.75 billion during the current year, as the department intensified enforcement of traffic laws.
More than 4.33 million driving licenses were also issued to citizens during the same period.
According to police, 44,151 challans were issued to smoke-emitting vehicles, while 6,785 vehicles were impounded at police stations. The fitness certificates of 28 vehicles were also confiscated as part of the enforcement drive.
Inspector General of Police Punjab, Abdul Kareem, directed that operations against traffic law violators continue without interruption and that amended traffic laws, reforms and modern systems be implemented at all costs.
The Inspector General of Police said the crackdown must continue against overloading, over speeding, underage driving, one way violations and other dangerous traffic offences.
The IG Punjab further directed that strict action be taken without discrimination against traffic law violators and that effective measures be adopted to recover outstanding traffic fines from defaulters.
He said SHOs and SDPOs must ensure coordinated efforts to eliminate traffic congestion and prevent road accidents, so citizens can be provided safe and well organized travel facilities.
