The Punjab government has introduced the Punjab Transport Policy 2026, imposing new limits on official vehicle usage and fuel allowances for police officers while directing the return of surplus government vehicles to improve oversight and reduce transport-related expenditures.
Under an official directive issued by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Telecommunication and Transport, all relevant police authorities, including the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Motor Transport (MT), have been instructed to implement the new policy with immediate effect.
As part of the reforms, police officers have been ordered to surrender any government vehicles exceeding their authorized entitlement. Vehicles currently assigned to departmental projects will also be returned to their respective departments to streamline the management of the official fleet.
The policy outlines revised vehicle and fuel allocations for police officers based on their rank.
The Inspector General (IG) Punjab will be entitled to one 2,800cc official vehicle with 500 litres of fuel for official duties. For official visits outside the station, the IG may use a 4,700cc vehicle, with additional fuel provided according to operational requirements. The IG will also receive a 1,800cc vehicle for personal use along with 300 litres of fuel.
Additional Inspectors General (Grade 21) will be allocated a 1,800cc vehicle with 250 litres of fuel for personal use, while a 2,800cc vehicle will be available for official travel.
Deputy Inspectors General (Grade 20) will receive a 1,500cc official vehicle and 250 litres of fuel.
The policy also specifies vehicle and fuel entitlements for Regional Police Officers (Grades 19–20), District Police Officers (Grades 18–19), Senior Superintendents of Police (Grade 19), Superintendents of Police (Grade 18), and Deputy Superintendents of Police (Grade 17), with fuel allocations to be provided within limits approved by the Finance Department.
Senior Superintendents of Police (Grade 18) will be entitled to a 1,500cc official vehicle and 200 litres of fuel.
The Punjab Transport Policy 2026 formally introduces standardized fuel consumption limits and tighter controls over the allocation of official vehicles. The government says the measures are intended to improve transparency, optimize the use of public resources and strengthen oversight of transport-related expenditures within the Punjab Police.
