Apple could launch its long-rumored Home Hub as early as October, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. However, the company could also delay the launch until early next year. The new Siri AI is expected to be one of the device’s biggest selling points. Apple reportedly wants the Home Hub to become a central part of its smart home plans.
The device will reportedly look like a HomePod smart speaker with a 7-inch display. However, it will offer more features than Apple’s existing smart speakers.
Apple is said to be developing a new operating system for the Home Hub. The software will reportedly be based on tvOS and combine elements from tvOS, watchOS, and iOS. The interface will include a grid of icons, widgets, and apps. It will also support customizable clock faces, giving users more control over the display.
Apple reportedly expects customers to buy multiple Home Hub units for different rooms. The device will reportedly come in both tabletop and wall-mounted versions. The Home Hub will also feature built-in cameras and facial recognition. This will allow it to recognize who is speaking and display personalized information.
The device could also adjust its interface based on the user’s distance. As someone moves closer, UI elements will reportedly become larger. They will shrink again as the person moves away. In addition, the Home Hub will support FaceTime video calls and home security monitoring. It will also include an intercom feature for homes with multiple Home Hub units.
Apple is reportedly planning an upgraded version for the future. This model could feature a larger 9-inch display and a robotic arm. The robotic arm would allow the screen to move around during FaceTime calls. As a result, it could capture more people or objects in the frame.
Meanwhile, Gurman’s latest report says Apple is still developing an in-home security camera. The product could compete directly with Amazon’s Ring lineup. Apple is also reportedly working on a new Apple TV set-top box. An updated HomePod mini speaker is also said to be in development.
According to the report, both the new Apple TV and improved HomePod mini could arrive “this fall.” The Home Hub, however, may take longer to reach the market.
If Apple launches the Home Hub, it could mark a major expansion of its smart home strategy. The company appears to be building a wider range of products around Siri and connected home features.
