Punjab Traffic Police has decided to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at 222 hotspot locations across five major cities to curb one-way traffic violations, officials said.
A formal communication has been sent to the Safe Cities Authority for the installation of ANPR cameras at identified violation hotspots in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Multan, Faisalabad and Sialkot.
According to traffic officials, these six cities account for 70 percent of all road accidents recorded in Punjab, with one-way violations ranking as the second leading cause of crashes.
The hotspot locations have been shared with the Safe Cities Authority as part of efforts to prevent accidents and enforce traffic laws more effectively. Officials said that in areas where ANPR cameras are not available, portable cameras will be installed instead to ensure coverage.
Traffic police officials said the cameras will enable round-the-clock monitoring of one-way violations, with fines to be issued to offenders based on camera footage.
