The rumor mill can finally stop spinning. Recently, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma officially shut down rumors suggesting a sale or spin-off of Microsoft’s gaming division. Sharma took over from Phil Spencer in late February 2026. Since then, she has navigated a sweeping organizational overhaul. Consequently, speculation about the brand’s future reached a boiling point. Now, she has set the record straight.
Shutting Down the Xbox Sale Rumors
Back in June 2026, independent reports suggested that Microsoft actively explored several structural alternatives for Xbox. These options reportedly included a spin-off, a joint venture, or a wholly owned subsidiary. However, Sharma recently gave the world an unequivocal answer regarding these rumors. She directly stated:
Xbox is not for sale.
Despite this clear denial, Microsoft remains totally open to change. Sharma noted that the company will deliberately pursue “the right partnerships” and “the right operating model”. Furthermore, she emphasized that Microsoft will take any necessary steps to strengthen the overall business financially.
A Sweeping Internal Restructuring
Xbox is currently undergoing a massive restructuring phase. As of Q3 2026, this overhaul is roughly three-quarters complete. Earlier in September, Microsoft executed another 268 layoffs. These job cuts directly impacted Halo Studios, Xbox Game Studios management, and various first-party teams.
Moreover, the company radically reassigned several major studios and franchises. Microsoft placed Obsidian Entertainment directly under Bethesda. Additionally, Activision now completely controls the Halo franchise. These aggressive moves perfectly align with Sharma’s core strategy. A sale remains permanently off the table, but further internal shake-ups remain highly likely.
Chasing Margins & Project Helix
Make no mistake, Xbox is not collapsing. The platform currently commands an impressive 500 million monthly active players. Instead, the gaming division is simply falling short of Microsoft’s strict “accountability margins”. After a quarter-century of aggressive investments, Redmond leadership expects massive returns.
Looking ahead, Microsoft takes a long-term approach to organizational decisions. Both Sharma and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella firmly expect Xbox to return to solid growth in fiscal year 2027, which began in July 2026. Therefore, the current strategy focuses heavily on two distinct goals. First, Xbox wants to aggressively expand its massive player base. Second, the engineering team is actively preparing Microsoft’s next-generation hardware. This highly anticipated system officially operates under the codename Project Helix.
