Apple’s long-rumored AirPods with built-in cameras are now in advanced testing, according to a recent report. Details about this next-generation product first appeared in February this year.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports, citing people familiar with the matter, that Apple has moved the device into design validation testing, also known as DVT. At this stage, working prototypes are already being tested inside the company.
After DVT, Apple will shift the product into production validation testing, or PVT. This step focuses on preparing early mass-production units. It helps Apple confirm manufacturing quality and consistency.
Although the hardware design is nearly complete, the launch is not fully locked in. Gurman says Apple could still delay the AirPods if the AI experience does not meet expectations. This includes how well the system works with Siri.
Originally, Apple planned to release these AirPods in the first half of this year. However, delays linked to an upgraded Siri have reportedly pushed the timeline further out.
The built-in cameras are expected to support smarter interactions with Siri. They may help the system understand a user’s surroundings more effectively. Some reports also suggest the product could be called AirPods Ultra.
In terms of design, Apple is not expected to make major changes. The new AirPods will likely resemble the current AirPods Pro 3. However, the stems may be slightly longer to fit the camera components.
