The Balochistan government has decided to introduce a convoy system on highways across the province to enhance the security of cargo trucks, passenger coaches, and other road users amid growing concerns over highway attacks.
The decision was announced by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Hamza Shafqaat during a meeting with representatives of the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where participants discussed the deteriorating security situation on provincial highways and its impact on transporters, passengers, and businesses.
Speaking at the meeting, Shafqaat said ensuring safe travel and the uninterrupted movement of goods remained a top priority for the provincial government. He added that authorities were committed to making highways safer and would take all necessary measures to strengthen security across the province.
Under the new initiative, a convoy system will be introduced for the secure movement of goods transport vehicles traveling from the Taftan border to Quetta and onward to other parts of the country.
The decision follows concerns raised by the business community over repeated attacks on cargo trucks, LPG bowsers, and other commercial vehicles operating on Balochistan’s highways.
Representatives of the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry urged the government to adopt stronger security measures to protect transporters, passengers, and the general public.
They also highlighted an increase in incidents involving the torching of trucks and highway robberies, warning that the deteriorating law and order situation has created uncertainty among importers, exporters, transport operators, and travelers.
