Bitwise Investment Advisers cleared major regulatory approval for a spot NEAR ETF late last week. NYSE Arca approved the listing application the same day. The SEC confirmed the registration statement’s effectiveness simultaneously. The fund will trade under ticker NRR on NYSE Arca, with trading expected to begin around September 29, 2026. This development marks the first US exchange-traded fund (ETF) that lets regular investors own NEAR tokens through their brokerage account.
The approval triggered an immediate market response. NEAR token surged approximately 26% following regulatory clearance. The cryptocurrency climbed to around $5.55, reaching its highest level in roughly 12 months. Within a single week after approval, NEAR gained approximately 50%, substantially outpacing Bitcoin and broader cryptocurrency market movements. Bitwise filed the final prospectus for the fund on September 24, completing the SEC registration process.
The ETF structures itself around direct NEAR token ownership combined with staking rewards. The fund will hold NEAR Protocol tokens directly and intends to stake 100% of its holdings. Staking essentially means locking up your NEAR tokens to help run the network in exchange for earning additional tokens automatically—think of it like earning interest on a savings account, except you’re generating new cryptocurrency rather than traditional interest. This arrangement generates additional yield on top of any price appreciation from the underlying token. That distinction separates Bitwise’s NEAR vehicle from traditional Bitcoin or Ether ETFs, which simply hold assets without generating additional rewards. Coinbase Custody will manage the NEAR tokens themselves. Meanwhile, BNY Mellon provides cash custody and administrative services for the fund.
The core appeal centers on accessibility. Investors can gain NEAR exposure through conventional brokerage accounts without setting up cryptocurrency exchange accounts or managing private keys independently. This structure particularly benefits investors seeking crypto exposure within retirement accounts or standard brokerage platforms where direct token custody proves impractical. Once trading begins, investors can purchase NRR shares through traditional brokerages just like any other stock or fund.
Bitwise set the fund’s annual sponsor fee at 0.75%. Seed capital at the initial filing stage totaled $200 across 8 shares valued at $25 each as of July 28, 2026. A planned seed basket of 20,000 shares valued at $500,000 provides working capital ahead of the public launch. The fund will create or redeem shares through authorized financial participants at established pricing.
Alongside regulatory approval, Bitwise released a comprehensive 39-page NEAR investment report co-authored by Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan. The report establishes a base case of $155 for NEAR token price by 2030. The bull case scenario projects $562 during that timeframe. These price targets significantly exceed NEAR’s current level near $5.33, indicating substantial upside potential according to Bitwise’s analysis. The firm’s assessment reflects confidence in NEAR’s long-term development trajectory and blockchain capabilities.
Important context accompanies the SEC approval. The regulatory green light establishes the ETF shares’ registration and exchange-listing status. Regulatory approval does not constitute an endorsement of NEAR as an investment or validation of the cryptocurrency itself. The SEC’s role is limited to approving the fund structure rather than validating the underlying asset. Investors should review the prospectus carefully before making investment decisions.
Several practical questions remain unanswered until actual trading begins. Demand levels for NRR shares will become visible only after launch. The efficiency of the staking mechanism in generating additional NEAR for the fund remains to be demonstrated. Whether NRR’s price tracks the underlying token accurately in daily trading will emerge through actual trading experience. These details typically separate ETFs that gain widespread investor following from those that attract minimal interest.
The approval timing coincides with renewed institutional interest in cryptocurrency exposure vehicles. Multiple recent ETF filings across the industry reflect growing demand for regulated, accessible crypto investment products. Bitwise’s NEAR ETF represents another step toward mainstreaming cryptocurrency access for traditional investors and retirement accounts.
