Pearl Abyss dropped a massive patch for Crimson Desert yesterday. Update 1.09 rolled out on May 29, 2026, marking the game’s 21st post-launch patch since its March 18 debut.
The update is currently live across Steam (PC and Mac), PlayStation, Xbox, and the Epic Games Store. Meanwhile, players using the Mac App Store will have to wait a little longer, as that version is still in progress.
This is not just a standard bug-fixing update. It brings highly requested quality-of-life changes, new content, and some quiet damage control from the developers.
Controller Remapping Finally Arrives in Crimson Desert
Since launch, players have aggressively criticized Crimson Desert’s default control scheme. Many early adopters called the layout overly complicated and completely janky. Now, Pearl Abyss has finally addressed these complaints.
Update 1.09 introduces a universal controller remapping feature. Therefore, new players can easily customize their inputs to avoid the initial learning curve. However, this fix arrives more than two months post-launch. Consequently, many veteran players feel the change is too little, too late. Some fans have already logged over 130 hours into the game. They were forced to adapt to the default layout, rendering the new customization feature largely useless for them.
The Quiet AI Asset Scrub
Update 1.09 also features a very specific change to the game’s graphics. According to the official changelog, the developer replaced certain “2D visual assets” to better align with the game’s art direction.
In reality, this change stems from the game’s day-one AI controversy. Back in mid-March, players discovered AI-generated assets left in the final build. Pearl Abyss quickly issued a statement, claiming these visuals were unintentional leftovers from an early prototyping phase. The studio promised a comprehensive audit to remove them. Judging by the vague wording in the 1.09 patch notes, this cleanup process is still actively underway.
Pets, Combat Skills, & Roadmap Progress
The new update heavily expands the game’s pet system. Players can now register approximately 30 new species of small animals as pets. Additionally, the developers added specific animations for picking up and putting down these animals.
Combat also received a slight expansion. Update 1.09 introduces new skills for Oongka and Damiane. You can trigger these abilities using the exact same input commands as Kliff’s “Blinding Flash Finisher”.
Beyond the immediate patch, Pearl Abyss is moving fast. The studio has already delivered most of the content promised for its April through June 2026 roadmap. As a result, fans can likely expect the summer roadmap announcement much earlier than scheduled.
Crimson Desert Key Fixes & Quality of Life Updates
Update 1.09 brings dozens of essential bug fixes and system improvements. Here are the most notable changes:
- Farming and UI: You can now assign seeds directly to quickslots. Furthermore, the dispatch UI now automatically sorts comrades with required mission skills to the top. A new “Repeating Mission” prompt also appears in the UI.
- Combat Adjustments: The patch fixes bugs that allowed Kliff to use his Evasive Kick and Blinding Flash Finisher without consuming enough Spirit. Oongka’s stagger meter increase from Quaking Fury was adjusted. Additionally, Damiane will no longer suffer massive performance drops when repeatedly hitting sanctum cores with element-imbued attacks.
- Environment Interactions: Bears will now properly eat fish dropped on the ground. Also, players can no longer accidentally donate legendary fish.
- Tool Fixes: The Magic Scythe now functions correctly in safe zones and with a full inventory. Similarly, the Mining Knuckledrill no longer fails when clinging to walls.
- Graphics and Audio: The developers fixed raytraced lighting bugs for both PC and Mac. They also scrubbed various localization errors across all languages and fixed a bug where English voice audio would mistakenly play while examining documents.
