Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face a Rs1.20 per unit increase in their August bills as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) holds a hearing today on a fuel cost adjustment request filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA).
The CPPA has sought the increase under the monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) mechanism, based on the cost of electricity generated in June. If NEPRA approves the request, the additional charge will be added to consumer bills in August, affecting users including in Karachi.
According to the CPPA application, hydropower supplied 39 per cent of total electricity generation in June. Locally sourced coal contributed 10.11 per cent, while imported coal accounted for 12.65 per cent. Imported gas generated 11.02 per cent of the electricity produced during the month, and nuclear power contributed 13.40 per cent.
NEPRA will announce its decision on the proposed adjustment following todays hearing.
The latest request comes weeks after NEPRA raised electricity prices by Rs0.34 per unit across the country under the FCA for May. That increase applied to all power distribution companies, including K-Electric, and was reflected in consumer bills for July, NEPRA confirmed in an official notification.
