Google Adds Identity Check To Protect Pixel And Samsung Phones From Theft

Google is updating Android phones with new features that prevent theft. The most recent development is “Identity Check,” a biometric authentication function that the business has introduced to protect smartphone owners’ personal information in case of loss.

“A stolen device in the wrong hands can expose sensitive data, leaving you vulnerable to identity theft, financial fraud, and privacy breaches,” Google wrote on its blog.

When enabled, this feature will stop criminals from accessing digital accounts on the smartphone, regardless of whether it is unlocked or has a compromised password. It is currently being rolled out to Pixel smartphones and Samsung Galaxy devices running Android 15.

When a user takes their smartphone outside of a trusted area, biometric authentication will be required before they can access some accounts and settings. Users can add multiple trusted locations, like their home or job addresses.

Keep in mind that Class 3 Biometrics previously called “strong biometrics” is the only way to access this feature on cell phones. After a period of 72 hours, these devices will revert to their primary authentication method, which may include a PIN, passcode, or pattern.

Additionally, they are immune to photo or mask spoofing attempts and have a reduced probability of false acceptance and real rejection. Class 3 biometric devices include those that provide three-dimensional facial recognition, in-display fingerprint sensors (optical or ultrasonic), or both.

Aside from making it impossible for a thief to disable “Find My Device” or theft protection, Identity Check also prevents them from changing the PIN number without biometric identification.

Google has also included tools to assist customers secure their data in case of loss, such as theft detection and offline device lock.
