Last year when Google released the Pixel phones, it announced that Pixel users will get unlimited Google Photos storage for full resolution photos and up to 4K videos. One important thing that it did not mention was if the unlimited storage will stay forever or it will expire sometime in the future.

Well, with the announcement of Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL yesterday, Google has made it clear that the unlimited Google Photos storage for Pixel owners will expire in 2020. Which means that Pixel owners will not be able to upload full resolution photos and 4K videos to Google Photos for free.

There’s something to keep in mind that Google offers unlimited photos storage for anyone for up to 16 MP photos and 1080p videos. So you will still be able to upload high-quality images and videos up to 1080p on Google Photos forever. You just have to select the “High Quality” option in your Google Photos settings and Google will automatically compress the photos and videos and will upload them for free.

Here’s the Google’s disclaimer on Pixel 2 product page:

“Disclaimer (US): Free, unlimited original-quality storage for photos and videos taken with Pixel through the end of 2020, and free, unlimited high-quality storage for photos taken with Pixel afterwards”
