Sony recently revealed God of War Laufey during its latest State of Play event. The upcoming game dramatically shifts the spotlight away from Kratos. Instead, players control his wife, Laufey (or Faye). She fights other deities in the “Everywhen”, the divine afterlife. A 20-minute demo highlighted fast-paced combat and the return of aerial combos. However, the bold pivot instantly sparked intense controversy. As of June 3, the internet has exploded with mixed reactions.
The Creator’s Harsh Verdict on God of War Laufey
David Jaffe created the original God of War in 2005. Yesterday, he livestreamed his reaction to the new showcase. Jaffe slammed the reveal. He called the game “uninspired” and “dull”. Furthermore, he argued that the title looks like a generic fantasy novel. According to Jaffe, the project relies entirely on the franchise name to generate attention. He explicitly stated he would only play it for his streaming audience.
However, context matters here. Jaffe has a long history of criticizing the Norse saga. He previously claimed the 2018 reboot made Kratos too soft. He also called Atreus a terrible character. Despite his harsh words, the Norse games boast massive commercial and critical success. The 2018 title and God of War Ragnarok hold stellar Metacritic scores of 94 and 9.4, respectively. Therefore, Jaffe’s opinion clearly does not reflect the broader player base.
Valid Critiques vs Manufactured Outrage
Currently, the community backlash stems from two distinct issues. First, fans miss the Ghost of Sparta. God of War games have always centered on Kratos. Consequently, an interquel without him feels jarring to series veterans.
Second, players heavily criticized the game’s lighter tone. The demo introduced Frank, a floating cube voiced by Jack Quaid. This character delivers Marvel-style banter. Consequently, fans worry this humor ruins the franchise’s traditionally dark atmosphere. This “Joss Whedon dialogue fatigue” represents a highly valid game design critique.
Unfortunately, a toxic minority overshadows these real concerns. Many angry users are review-bombing the concept online. They scream “God of Woke” simply because the game features a female lead. This sexist backlash completely ignores gaming history. Spin-offs like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Halo: Reach, and Metal Gear Solid 2 successfully swapped main characters in the past.
Corporate Leeching & The Franchise’s Future
The massive controversy even attracted non-endemic brands. Domino’s Pizza UK jumped into the debate on X. The corporate account tweeted that a God of War game without Kratos resembles a “Pepperoni Passion without the Pepperoni”. Ultimately, this move represents cynical engagement farming. Brands routinely hijack gaming culture wars merely to sell products.

Beyond the social media drama, God of War Laufey acts as a crucial test for Sony. Modern AAA games take years to develop and cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Studios must expand their intellectual properties to survive. If Laufey succeeds, Sony can build an expansive universe. This success could easily pave the way for an Atreus spin-off.
Conversely, if it fails, Sony remains trapped in an IP prison. The franchise will stay forever chained to an aging Kratos. The stakes for PlayStation have never been higher.
