Nadra Faces Allegations From Senator Over Personal Data Misuse

ISLAMABAD: A Senator on Monday echoed concerns over alleged NADRA data misuse, claiming the authority was involved in the selling of citizens’ thumbprints and misusing their personal data.

Senator Anusha Rehman voiced her concerns during a session of the Senate on Digital Nation Pakistan Bill, which was approved by the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom.

Senator Anusha urged the lawmakers concerned to address NADRA data misuse through the Personal Data Protection Bill 2023, which seeks to regulate data management and keep government bodies like under scrutiny.

In response to the Senator’s claims, the IT Secretary said the data protection bill was in final stages of consultations with departments concerned, and would be tabled for legislative approval following consultations.

The IT Ministry had previously opposed the Personal Data Protection Bill 2023, which had been submitted as a Private Member’s Bill (PMB) by Senator Afnan Ullah.
The ministry said the bill violates legislative policy, deviates from the constitutional framework, and fails to meet procedural and consultative requirements.
