David Gaider boasts a legendary career in the video game industry. He wrote iconic titles like Baldur’s Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, and Dragon Age. However, his current venture faces a severe threat. Summerfall Studios currently stands at a “make or break” crossroads. The studio must secure publisher funding for its next project, or it will likely shut down.
Gaider co-founded Summerfall Studios with Liam Esler in 2017. Previously, the studio released two moderate indie successes. They launched Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical in 2023 through Balor Games. Later, they self-published the roguelike deckbuilder Malys in 2025. Now, Gaider wants to build something much bigger.
A Crew of Rogues in the Sky
In a recent PC Gamer interview published on July 6, Gaider revealed exciting details about the studio’s upcoming RPG. Players will control a crew of rogues. Furthermore, they will operate an airship and execute various heists. Gaider described the game’s tone as lighthearted. He specifically noted it is “not full-on comedy, but something that could make me smile”.
Despite completing several prototypes, Summerfall Studios struggles to secure a publisher. Consequently, the studio faces a brutal catch-22. Interested publishers demand the game reach 80% completion before they commit any funds. Meanwhile, the studio cannot afford to reach that development milestone without the funding in the first place. Therefore, Gaider warns that the studio might close entirely if they fail to secure a backer soon.
An Industry in Retreat
This funding crisis highlights a broader collapse within the gaming industry. Over the last three years, the market has shrunk significantly. Because game development carries immense risk, publishers aggressively avoid uncertain investments. They only want guaranteed safe bets.
Moreover, massive layoffs continue to plague major publishers like Xbox and Sony every year. This industry contraction hurts studios of all sizes. For instance, the development studio behind “Life is Strange” recently warned that its own funding will run out by November 2026.
A Return to Dragon Age?
If Summerfall Studios collapses, Gaider faces an uncertain future. He doubts he can easily find a new role in such a saturated and competitive job market. However, he remains open to returning to AAA game development.
Interestingly, Gaider has softened his stance on the Dragon Age franchise. EA recently put the series on the back burner. This decision followed the underwhelming 2024 release of The Veilguard, which notably served as the first Dragon Age game written without Gaider. Consequently, BioWare shifted its focus entirely to Mass Effect following its own internal layoffs.
Previously, Gaider gave a “hard no” regarding a return to the franchise. Now, he shows a willingness to take on the challenge. If EA handed him the reins today, Gaider knows exactly what he would do. He wants to take the franchise back to its basics. Specifically, he intends to make the world “dark and dangerous” once again. Most importantly, Gaider stated he is perfectly willing to “do things that will make people upset”.
