Capcom just surprised gamers with an unexpected schedule change. The publisher officially moved up the release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Originally, the game was set to launch on September 25, 2026. However, players will now get it three weeks early. The highly anticipated title arrives on Friday, September 4, 2026.
Capcom confirmed this change with a short video announcement. The clip creatively showed the number 25 sliced down to 4. Consequently, the company updated its pre-order strategy. Pre-order bonuses are now officially “early adopter bonuses”. These rewards include a Lion Dog Charm and a Sealed Curse Sword Appearance. Furthermore, fans can claim these items until the original September 25 date. Capcom is also updating the game’s demo to reflect these schedule changes.

Physical Onimusha: Way of the Sword Editions Confirmed
Recently, Sony decided to stop manufacturing physical copies of PlayStation games. Naturally, this move raised concerns among game collectors. Fortunately, Capcom quickly quelled these fears. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will receive a full physical release across all current-generation consoles.
Specifically, the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will ship on traditional Blu-ray Discs. Meanwhile, the Switch 2 edition will utilize Nintendo’s Game-Key Card format. Despite this early release, the game firmly retains its $69.99 price tag.
This launch marks a massive milestone for the publisher. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first new entry in the franchise in exactly two decades. Previously, the series saw its last major release in 2006 with Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams on the PS2. Since then, the hack-and-slash series remained mostly dormant, aside from some modern remasters of the first two games.
Now, Capcom is aggressively reviving its older IPs. Therefore, this new game joins other upcoming revivals like Mega Man: Dual Override and a brand-new Okami sequel.
Capcom’s Winning Strategy & September Rivals
Interestingly, this is not the first time Capcom has adjusted a 2026 release schedule. Earlier this year, the company successfully moved Pragmata up from April 24 to April 17. That decision paid off massively. Pragmata quickly became a best-seller, standing right alongside the multi-million seller Resident Evil Requiem.
Capcom clearly hopes for a similar hot streak here. However, Onimusha faces incredibly stiff competition next month. It launches in the exact same window as heavyweights like Marvel Wolverine and The Blood of Dawnwalker. Afterward, Capcom will shift its focus entirely to Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, which launches on October 9.
