The federal government has introduced a new digital pension verification system that will allow pensioners to verify their identity through facial recognition technology from the comfort of their homes.
Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced the initiative during a session of the National Assembly, saying the system is designed to simplify the verification process for elderly pensioners and eliminate the need for visits to banks.
Under the new mechanism, pensioners will be able to complete identity verification remotely using facial recognition, making the process more convenient and accessible, particularly for senior citizens and those with mobility challenges.
Highlighting the government’s broader fiscal strategy, the finance minister said several measures have been introduced to expand the country’s tax base and improve revenue collection. He added that the administration is focusing on digitalisation and artificial intelligence to reduce discretionary powers and enhance transparency in governance.
Aurangzeb also informed lawmakers that salaries and pensions of government employees have been significantly increased under the latest budget measures.
Discussing the country’s economic outlook, he stated that major economic indicators have improved over the past year, with Pakistan’s current account returning to surplus.
The minister further revealed that overseas Pakistanis remitted $4.25 billion, while the country’s freelance workforce contributed $1.6 billion to the national economy, underscoring the growing role of digital and overseas earnings in supporting economic growth.
