The Punjab government Government of Punjab has introduced a revised penalty and point deduction system for 26 traffic violations under amended motor vehicle regulations published in the Punjab Gazette on May 7, 2026.
Under the updated framework, overspeeding fines now range from Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles and three-wheelers to Rs. 10,000 for heavy transport vehicles. Offenders will also face a deduction of four penalty points from their driving record.
The revised rules impose stricter penalties for reckless and negligent driving, with fines reaching up to Rs. 10,000 along with four penalty points.
Driving without a valid licence will now result in fines ranging from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 5,000 depending on the type of vehicle, while operating vehicles without valid fitness certificates can also attract penalties of up to Rs. 5,000.
The new enforcement list also covers violations such as signal breaking, wrong-way driving, overloading, illegal parking, driving without lights, use of mobile phones while driving, excessive smoke emissions, route permit violations, and the use of pressure horns in silence zones.
In addition, motorcyclists riding without helmets and carrying more than two persons on motorcycles have also been included under the revised penalty structure.
According to the notification, the use of fake number plates can result in fines of up to Rs. 5,000. Authorities have also introduced a penalty point mechanism for repeated traffic offences as part of efforts to strengthen road safety enforcement across Punjab.
