The Punjab government is set to launch its long-awaited Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system, marking a significant step in the province’s efforts to modernize urban transportation.
The project, approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, is expected to cost around Rs. 6 billion, with authorities aiming for an early rollout before June 2026.
According to officials, the ART route will connect CBD Kalma Chowk to Istanbul Chowk, passing through major arteries including Main Boulevard Gulberg and Jail Road Canal two of Lahore’s busiest corridors.
The system will feature three-coach trains with a passenger capacity of approximately 270 people. Services are planned to run at intervals of 15 to 20 minutes, with an estimated daily ridership of around 18,000 commuters.
The trains will be supplied by CRRC, while operations will be handled by a local transport company.
Originally approved last year under a broader five-year transport strategy, the ART system is being positioned as a modern, eco-friendly solution. Officials highlighted that similar systems are already operational in countries like Malaysia, the UAE, and Qatar.
Designed to reduce travel time and ease congestion, the ART network will operate on a fully electrified system supported by solar energy, aligning with sustainability goals and reducing reliance on conventional fuels.
The project is part of a wider initiative to introduce advanced transport infrastructure across Punjab, although its implementation has faced delays since initial approval.
