Actual Pinkerton’s agents file a lawsuit against Red Dead Redemption 2
The real-life Pinkerton’s agents have filed a legal case against Red Dead Redemption 2 over involvement of Pinkerton’s agents in the game-story.
After being released in October last year, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 quickly rose to one of the world’s leading games for consoles. Set in 1899, the game surrounds about the survival of an American gang which had retreated after a robbery attempt. The game story includes a detective agency from that time hunting down the runaway gang.
Fast forward 2019, it turns out that Pinkerton Detective Agency, which was founded back in 1850, still exists as a real company by the name of Pinkerton Consulting & Investigations under a bigger security company, Securitas AB. The real-life Pinkerton company has now sued Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive over the characters of two Pinkerton’s agents, namely Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross.
The lawsuit mentions that the game uses the trademarks of the detective company without their permission and portrays them as foes. Pinkerton said that it needed royalty money for using their name. Rockstar, on the other hand, has replied by saying that the game is “historically accurate” and that the presence of Pinkerton actors should be “declared fair use, arguing they’re part of Red Dead Redemption 2’s detailed historical setting.”
