Snapchat announced multiple Harry Potter-themed activations within the app on Monday, forming part of an expanded promotion for HBO’s upcoming series airing later this year. Because HBO is making a significant push to engage younger audiences, Snapchat’s massive Gen Z user base offers an ideal platform for building early anticipation.
As per Snapchat:
Snapchat is bringing the magic IRL with fan events across the U.S. and U.K., featuring Snap Mirrors that let fans try on wizarding world clothing and accessories inspired by their Hogwarts House.
The centerpiece of the campaign involves augmented reality. Snapchat is rolling out 12 AR Lenses built around different elements of the story, giving users interactive ways to engage with Harry Potter concepts while promoting the show directly inside the app. Since AR Lenses consistently drive high engagement on Snapchat, this approach lets fans participate rather than simply view advertisements.
Beyond Lenses, Snapchat is expanding the experience across several features. The platform added themed chat wallpapers alongside Bitmoji fashion items, allowing users to dress their digital avatars in wizard robes and costumes. Additionally, Snapchat introduced custom Harry Potter-style app icons, creating another engagement touchpoint that reaches fans even before they open the application.
The promotion also extends beyond the digital realm entirely. Snapchat confirmed it is hosting real-life activations to broaden the campaign’s reach. According to the company, Snapchat is bringing the magic to life through fan events across the US and UK, featuring Snap Mirrors that let attendees try on wizarding world clothing and accessories inspired by their Hogwarts House.
The timing reveals a deliberate long-term strategy. Since the new Harry Potter series does not air on HBO Max until Christmas, this activation begins months ahead of the premiere to steadily build hype. Because the campaign starts this early, it could represent the beginning of a sustained seeding process designed to maximize engagement closer to launch.
The September timing may also connect to seasonal opportunities. By establishing the promotion now, HBO could link into Halloween costume trends, creating an expanded campaign that reignites interest among older fans while introducing the franchise to newer, younger audiences simultaneously. This dual approach reflects HBO’s broader ambition for the reboot.
Snapchat’s Harry Potter activations became available beginning September 1 within the app, with additional features planned to roll out over the coming months as anticipation builds toward the series premiere this holiday season.
